Der Einsatz von Sulfonamiden ist verbunden mit großen erhöht das Risiko von Stevens-Johnson-Syndrom, toxische epidermale necrolysis und andere schwere dermatologische Reaktionen, obwohl diese Phänomene sind selten als ganzes. Hepatitis, Pneumonie und interstitielle nephritis haben auch aufgetreten in Verbindung mit Sulfonamid-überempfindlichkeit. Therapie mit Sulfonamiden verabreicht werden soll vorsichtig bei Patienten mit schweren Allergien, asthma oder AIDS, da diese Patienten können ein erhöhtes Risiko für potenziell schwere überempfindlichkeits-Reaktionen hervorrufen. Patienten sollten angewiesen werden, umgehend zu melden der Anzeichen und Symptome, die möglicherweise vor dem Beginn der kutanen Manifestationen des Stevens-Johnson-Syndrom, wie hohes Fieber, starke Kopfschmerzen, stomatitis, Konjunktivitis, rhinitis, urethritis, und balanitis. Sulfonamid-Therapie sollte beendet werden, wenn ein Hautausschlag entwickelt.
